What a Long Strange It’s Been

by Dr. Jeffrey W. Neal

Based on a life in education, What a Long Strange It’s Been details the joys, struggles, and heartbreak of navigating years as a dedicated educator. It also examines the shooting death of a beloved teacher at the hands of a fourteen-year-old student, its aftermath, and the school community’s recovery. As shootings, particularly, at schools show no signs of stopping, there is a lesson to be learned. Ultimately, the author hopes readers enjoy this celebration of education as well as gain some insight into the recovery from PTSD.

A Great Book and A Must Read

Posted by Betty O'Neil on Jun 20th 2022

What a powerful book! It was hard for me to put it down once I began reading it. The experiences included in this memoir are experiences Dr. Neal had a a classroom teacher, a basketball coach, a guidance counselor, and as an assistant principal. They are often funny, sometimes sad, and once in a while frustrating. The memoir describes the rewards and challenges of a 34 year career in education at Lake Worth Middle School, a public school in South Florida. Dr. Neal writes about the reality of the school shooting death of a beloved teacher by a middle school student. The trauma and healing process by students and staff from the experience were profound. This memoir shines light on the dedication, resiliency, and sense of community by Lake Worth Middle School's staff, students, and parents brought on by this tragedy. I enjoyed reading this book!
