The Hill Top Estates is an ethnography of real events that led up to the mental breakdown of the author and the trials and tribulations of losing everything to the incompetence of professionals from a prominent university. After severe trauma and mental breakdowns, the author would find herself traveling to Southern Nevada to live in a tent for seven months and do everything in her power to regain her life, her children, and her sanity while documenting the daily life of a homeless person in Pahrump, Nevada. Through the help of a state mental health facility and a private mental health counselor, she would find her way back to life and graduate with her bachelor’s in psychology then got her master’s at Graduate School in social work. She would find her way back to the state mental health facility that saved her life to become a licensed master social worker, clinical social worker intern, and mental health therapist for the small Township of Pahrump, Nevada, and the homeless people on the hilltop estates.

About the Author:

Carolle Martindale would like to thank her four children for giving her the will, power and courage to move forward in life, to not just live, but to thrive with love and purpose.  She would also like to thank the staff of the mental health facility, especially Sue Haut, who never lost hope and inspired her to fulfill her dreams of becoming a licensed social worker. She would like to extend a very special thank you to Michelle Halberg, her therapist who sat with her week after week, and listened to her stories of severe trauma, abuse and neglect, while she processed, digested and learned to value life for the first time and with a renewed sense of love and a willingness to give back to her own communities. She hopes that all the homeless people, the refugees, the war-torn nations around the world and the tortured children in her lifetime find just enough hope to keep fighting one more day. To keep breathing one more minute and to see just a small glimpse of the future of good and happiness, and finally reach a lifetime where they can live free from all types of pain, physical, emotional, and mental.
