Using common themes found in his beloved country of Jamaica, Bentley Walcott has spun an engaging collection of folk tales in Tally Mi Banana. Beginning with the title work, Tally Mi Banana, we learn the heartbreaking yet uplifting story behind the popular song which begins, Day, oh! Mi say day, oh! Daylight come an me wa go home! Continuing in this vein, we find that Grandpa Nightingale isnt an old man after all, but one who performed a great service for his feathered friends and brought joy to other people in the process. We then learn from The Traitor that things are not always what they seem, superstitions grow from reality in Fangs of Rival, friendship is a give and take proposition in Barble Jack, ghost tales often have a logical explanation in Cockroach Surgeon, and even young boys have creative survival instinct when their lives are at stake in Dangerous Ground. Written in the tone of tales learned at an elders knee, Tally Mi Banana is a charming and moral collection sure to be handed down for generations.
