Howard James Jordan weaves an astute and compelling narrative in his book, Race Riot! Mob Lynching! Senseless Death! A Hurricane of Racial Violence Sparked the Civil Rights Movement: 1917-1960s, where he takes a significant portion of this American history to tackle some important questions about the challenges and triumphs of Black people during that period. It is a pivotal period that connotes the evolution of how Blacks fought to overcome white supremacy, and its subsequent impact of discrimination, and systematic racism.

More than a categorical listing violent episodes during that time, Jordan also utilizes a laser-focused historically-based analysis, to include a broader view, of the reaction of Black people. He details how the impatience of Black people’s disenchantment with American ideals was growing, as were their hopes for a piece of the American dream. Jordan takes a deep drive into how the violent events of Red Summer, also brought into focus the voice, and activism, of a new range of Black leadership. Their views offered varying perspectives on solutions to the fight for Black equality, using books, magazines and newspapers as their bullhorn.

It was at Sarah Lawerence, that Jordan cultivated his skills as a wood carver, under the tutelage of his Black Studies professor, the late Joan Waite. It was under her guidance that sent Jordan to further his studies in Nigeria. While studying at Nigerian University, Jordan became a field researcher. His subsequent work drew acclaim from his academic field supervisors as “impressive qualitatively and quantitatively work.”
