Dominique Karaya takes her experiences as an Indigenous American woman from the Southeast region of the United States and places them into three separate sections of ruminations, prayers, and prose. Karaya heartbreakingly illustrates the suffering of Indigenous Americans under European colonial rule, from the loss of their villages and land to the crippling loss of identity due to the systemic creation of the two-caste society of black and white, a world in which Indigenous people do not fit.

An important work, Karaya brings to light these struggles and emotional tolls made in a world where the erasure of Indigenous people is the norm. She highlights the additional pain of Indigenous women—the losing of value in their communities in a world where patriarchal European culture has dominated the current culture of the United States. With this collection, Karaya shares her words for other Aboriginal Americans to help heal, and to spread awareness of their plight in modern-day America.

Dominique Karaya is a Kiawah, Jamaican Taïno and Creek native born and raised in Nashville, TN. Karaya is a healer, artist, culture revivalist, songkeeper, educator, family historian and founder of the organization American Indian Traditional Healing Center.
