I Can't Breathe follows the journey of an eleven-year-old girl who, frustrated with the state of the world in the 1960s, longs for change—though she predicts that meaningful transformation may take decades. The struggles we faced then don’t have to define what this generation is willing to endure. True generational change happens when we unite for a common cause, recognizing that we all share the same humanity. Equality, respect, and justice belong to everyone.

Gilmer, as it reflects a belief that her generation wouldn’t be the catalyst for change, but that future generations would rise to the challenge, sometimes at great cost. M.C. Gilmer is actively engaged in her community, focusing on helping homeless
families and veterans find shelter. In her free time, she enjoys writing, sewing, and cherishing moments with her grandchildren. A lifelong passion of hers has been teaching children with special needs. She has been happily married to her husband Michael for 38 years and is the proud mother of two sons, Randy Karnellius and Michael Jamal, and a daughter, Sabrina Natasha.
