About the Book

Getting a GRIP on CHARACTER is a complete curriculum designed for teachers, parents, grandparents, and anyone who has a role in working with children. Using the metaphor that life is like rock climbing, students learn to get a grip on 7 Handholds of Character (respect, responsibility, courage, honesty, perseverance, trustworthiness, and caring.)

Praise for the book!

Getting a Grip on Character is an engaging curriculum designed with elementary and middle school students in mind, but adults will surely read it and reflect on the importance of modeling good character for the young people in their lives. The stories of historical figures who possessed great character show how one person can help create a more respectful and caring world. This book would be a wonderful addition to any parent’s or teacher’s library. - Teresa Pedersen (Quality Control Manager, Nampa, ID)

Even without being a core course, the content of Getting a Grip on Character would be valuable for all students. The lessons in the book could be used in succession, as a full curriculum, or as stand-alone topics. Teachers could pick and choose which handhold of character to focus on, depending on the student behavior that needs to be addressed. The activities are easy to follow, with supplies that are readily available. Character education is a vital part of any student’s classroom experience. Getting a Grip on Character provides helpful tools for starting conversations about character attributes. - John Pedersen (Middle School Science Teacher, Boise, ID)

Wonder Guide to Help Kids Understand Character

Posted by Peny Ward on May 30th 2022

This is an extremely well-written book with so many resources to help children understand the importance of character traits such as respect, honesty, responsibility, and caring. The stories and activities are presented in such a way as to inspire and open the way for conversations. I would highly recommended it for any parent, grandparent, or teacher who wants to help a child reach their full potential in life.
