When close friends Patsy and Karen go on their annual camping trip to the lake, their plans include hiking and taking in the sights and sounds of the great outdoors. But suddenly their plans are interrupted—by the sound of gunshots. The girls’ senses become heightened when they hear a scream and see someone gunned down in cold blood.

Meanwhile Sheriff Phillip Chandler of Jefferson County, Montana, is working alongside law enforcement officials in neighboring Madison County when his deputy Pete Dolan is found murdered on a trail near Lake Louise. Devastated by the news, Phillip’s mind is exhausted trying to make sense of it all. Who would want to kill Pete, a kind man with no enemies? What exactly did the girls see that day? And more importantly—who?
