Hey Lil One tells of the continued injustice within the Black community. Although children’s fiction, it is inspired by real situations surrounding the deaths of several Black men and women over the years. Jianna Brown's powerful message against police brutality, racism, and violence, comes through in insightful and child friendly terms. It addresses serious issues with our youth, as well as readers of any age. Her message is intended to help readers understand the significance of the Black Lives Matter movement.

About the Author

Jianna Brown is an elementary school teacher in Las Vegas, NV. She taught 4th grade for three years and is currently teaching 2nd. Over the next few years, she plans on going back to school to pursue a career as a school librarian. She is passionate about literacy, and believes that it’s important that kids (especially minorities) have access to stories that they can connect to. As someone who has been affected by both gun violence and racism, she hopes that this book continues to shed light on systemic oppression and inequality within the Black community. This is the first book that she’s written, but she plans on writing more.

Such a heartfelt and necessary read!

I could not have imagined a better way to honor all of the lives lost to police brutality. This book is what the world needs during these trying times. Our black and brown babies deserve to be seen, heard, and more importantly, uplifted. This book was right on time to shed light on the injustices and hopefully spark conversations. Be it in your home or in your classrooms. It’s well written and will resonate to all ages. Thank you Jianna, for giving us hope and restoring our faith. I look forward to adding more of your work to my collection!

Beautiful Story for All Kids

I love how it is written as a poem. This story is so beautiful and presents recent events in kid-friendly terms. As a teacher, I believe it's important that kids are allowed the safe space to process what they see and hear in the news. I can't wait to read this book with my students in the classroom!

This book is important and timely. Miss Brown's work is beautifully subtle yet powerful. She invites the reader to explore, identify/examine restriction while empowering young readers to be present, show up authentically and love themselves. I highly recommend this book!
