fl (Flute)
by Gladys A. Arome

Akor, a boy who lives in the West African kingdom of the Igala people, receives an fl from his father. From that day on, Akor finds he cannot go anywhere without it. He takes it everywhere he goes, playing the fl every morning when he wakes up and every night when he goes to bed. Akor also makes friends with the animals on his fathers farm, who gather to hear him play.

But one night after working late with his father, Akor realizes he left his fl at the farm. The swamp through which he must pass is populated with crocodiles, and it is very dangerous to cross after sunset. But Akor insists on returning to the farm to retrieve his fl even though there are serious risks involved.

Are the risks Akor takes worth the possibility of being reunited with his fl?

fl (Flute), by Gladys A. Arome, is an endearing story of a boy who speaks to us through innocent eyes and a willful heart.
