Growing up in Hickshaw has not been easy for Mave and Shirley. In a town with long-standing traditions and ideals, it is best to follow than rebel. As unexpected challenges arise and come their way, will their friendship and relationships be able to survive the small-town world?

As they travel on their journey, the two young women will find just how far they have to travel to find a true home of their own.

I think the book is a good book, even with some of the flaws. It's not a book that draws on the usual ploys of sex and violence. Some might find the topic of love and marriage quite boring. However, this book gives a quite insightful, alternative glimpse into the whole concept of what is to love and be loved. Interestingly, the books also touches upon themes related to personal development and growth and returning to the same place, which is always good.
Technically, the writing is between average and good. The dialogue is excellent because it gives the readers a sense of who these characters are, but in terms of description, the readers have to fill in a lot for themselves.
Overall, the book is a good go-to for anyone in a women's literature class or just thirsting for a short read.
