Ficarra is a retired surgeon who practiced medicine for most of his life in his native New York, where he also served for several years as physician to the Metropolitan Opera House. He has been a member of the New York Academy of Sciences since 1949, the Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem since 1952, the Order of Malta since 1957, and the Catholic Academy of Sciences of the United States since 1987. He is the author of numerous articles as well as four books on medicine, three on medicine and law, and one on medical history. In his spare time, Dr. Ficarra enjoys gardening, opera, and antiques.
