He received degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Minnesota and also attended the Minnesota Executive Program in the Carlson School of Management. A former member and officer of many professional organizations, including the Mid-continent Area Power Pool and the Association of Edison Illuminating Companies, he has also served on the Governors Information Access Council and was a board member and officer of several charities and local planning boards, as well as raising two daughters.
